Malling

I actually hung out at the mall in Carbondale quite a bit when I was in high school. Primarily at the WaldenBooks store. You would think I would try to get a job there, but for some reason I never did. The mall bookstore I got a job at was when I was living in Champaign, over 15 years after I graduated HS. I wish now I had tried getting job at WaldenBooks, because of the benefits of cheap books! :) My college job was working at the Lesar Law School Library, which is where my mild interest in the law came from.

Another store I would hang out quite a bit was an import store. I always liked looking at the stuff, but I very rarely bought anything.

I would love to work in a book store, but I'd never get my pay outof the store.

I didn't hang out in the mall as a teen because there were none close by.

Enjoyed the read.

Oh - I don't think we have WaldenBooks here in Canada, but I remember countless hours spent wandering around the Coles bookstore when I was a kid. Definitely takes me back!

I remember WaldenBooks, and I'm pretty sure it was one of the places I fruitlessly applied to for a job (back in the early-mid '80s recession). It's hard to beat an employee discount on books!

Waldenbooks.... I remeber them! I think they merged with Barnes and Noble trying to outdo Borders. Short but sweet read.

Peace~~~D

I haven't seen a Waldenbooks in years but I loved going to them when I was a kid. I used to buy a ton of Dungeons and Dragons stuff (we didn't have a gaming shop in my area) and fantasy/sci-fi books at our local one. I, too, would have loved working at a book store. In fact, one of the saddest things about the digital era has been seeing so many bookstores (including used book stores) shutting down in my area. I think all we have left nearby is a Barnes and Noble. Sigh.

This made me think of some of the songs I know about books. This is a favorite:

I've applied at a few bookstores, never been hired. One of them, the Powell's bookstore in Portland, Oregon, sort of broke my heart. They're very picky about their employees, and are deluged with applicants, but even with an entire college degree in religious studies along with various cataloging experiences - I still wasn't qualified enough to shelve books for them. Such a disappointment.

Cheap books are a good thing. I tend to get mine second-hand.
