What better way to celebrate Fountain Pen Day than to post a short review? :) I've been using fountain pens almost exclusively for over three years or so at this point.

I decided to do a review of one of the first style of fountain pen I bought, which is the Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pen. cut for pics )

Finally finished this yesterday. Checked it out from the St. Louis County Library 09 May 2015.

I'm not quite sure what to say about it.

It is interesting. I don't know if I would have picked it up if it hadn't been a Hugo nominee.

It takes place during the Cultural Revolution in China and the present day. Radio Astronomy plays a part, as well as a VR computer game. The alien invasion is not explicit, and is actually only spelled out and confirmed in the last few chapters.

Meh.

4.5 5.5 out of 10

ETA: As I was driving to the library to return it, I realized that in some ways, the writing reminded me of Isaac Asimov. Mostly in that there is not a lot of 'action' but a lot more of the characters talking

well, to all those who are heading out in the next day or so, to AnthroCon, I wish you all a safe trip! I hope everyone has a wonderfully fun time!

This weekend has been fairly movieful.
ont the 4th, I drove Trace and Roci over to Deer Valley AMC theater, and Trace paid for my ticket for War of the Worlds
Then tonight, Jos & I went to go see Herbie: Fully Loaded
both are fairly good movies, and I fully recommend both of them.

War of the Worlds 4 out of 5 stars
Nice special effects.
One of the things I liked about it was how it followed a normal guy (Tom Cruise) not a hero who is instrumental to the defeat of the invaders. (after all, it would be sortof hard to follow a microbe. :) A bit extreme at points, but I believe if something similar happened, it would work out fairly close to how this movie went.
A bit contrived in places, but overall quite scary.
(Hmmm... Isn't Scientology a belief that alien souls took over Earth before humans evolved. I guess Cruise already has a bit of experience here. :)
(full theater)

Herbie: Fully Loaded 5 stars
wonderfully funny movie. As I said above, I went to see it with Jos, who is a fan of the previous Herbie movies. I saw (some?) of them when they first came out, and enjoyed them. Jos, like my dad, is a car person. Me, as long as it gets me from her to there I'm happy.
Herbie is now a little more animated than previous ones. Mostly his front bumper moves to form smile or frown. Headlights turn and blink.
Matt Dillon is good as the bad guy. (and cute).
Theater was mostly empty
